Exact session time and location will be confirmed in due course and updated here. \n\n\n\nConvenors: \n\n\n\n\nProfessor Jennifer Hill (Visiting Professor\, University of the West of England)\n\n\n\nDr Harry West (University of the West of England)\n\n\n\nDr Sonja Rewhorn (Open University)\n\n\n\nDr Alan Marvell (University of Gloucestershire)\n\n\n\n\nFormat: In-person paper session \n\n\n\nSponsored by the Geography & Education Research Group \n\n\n\nEducation is frequently positioned as a vehicle for social mobility and justice\, yet institutions are deeply uneven places\, shaped by widening social\, economic and spatial inequalities. This session invites contributions that critically examine student and/or staff experiences of teaching\, learning and assessment within these unequal contexts. It invites contributions that explore how educational experiences\, institutional resources and academic labour are geographically differentiated and unevenly valued. \n\n\n\nContributions may focus on geographical disparities in education provision\, for example widening participation\, inequalities in academic careers and working conditions\, in addition to broader spatial politics of internationalisation\, and unequal impacts of neoliberal austerity\, marketisation and institutional restructuring. \n\n\n\nThe session also welcomes work on campus geographies\, such as inclusive pedagogies\, assessment practices and curriculum design\, and how these are inflected by inequalities related to class\, race\, gender\, disability\, citizenship and place. Papers might also discuss digital divides\, accessibility\, caring responsibilities\, precarity and institutional policies and practices shaping everyday educational experiences in classrooms\, online spaces and the field. \n\n\n\nCrucially\, the session seeks to move beyond diagnosis to consider resistance\, reform and reimagining of power\, privilege and exclusion. This includes reflections on policy interventions\, collective action and alternative educational practices. Contributions may be empirical\, conceptual or practice-based\, and may engage with students\, staff or institutional policy contexts. SUMMARY:Pre-RGS GeogEd session -  Making geography matter in turbulent time
DESCRIPTION:Venue: Hybrid (online and at the Royal Geographic Society\, London) \n\n\n\nIn a period marked by significant uncertainty and rapid change—whether arising from shifting geopolitical relations\, the escalating climate emergency\, the cost‑of‑living crisis\, or the increasingly precarious position of higher education—we find ourselves working and teaching within profoundly turbulent times. Geography\, as a discipline centrally concerned with spatial relationships\, power\, environment\, and society\, is uniquely positioned to engage with these challenges. While there is broad consensus that geography matters\, an enduring question remains: how do we effectively demonstrate its relevance and value to young people\, policymakers\, communities\, and our own institutions? \n\n\n\nThis seminar\, hosted by GeogEd\, provides a timely opportunity to reflect on and critically discuss the ongoing and future relevance of geography in addressing contemporary global and local challenges. The event will also mark the 50th anniversary of the Journal of Geography in Higher Education (JGHE)\, celebrating its longstanding contribution to advancing scholarship\, pedagogy\, and debate in geography education\, and its role in shaping this agenda over the past five decades. \n\n\n\nBringing together colleagues from across the diverse spectrum of geographical research\, teaching\, and practice\, the seminar will create space to explore how we are collectively working to make geography matter—intellectually\, socially\, and institutionally—both now and in the future. The programme will combine a series of short presentations with a participatory workshop\, encouraging dialogue\, exchange of ideas\, and collaborative reflection. \n\n\n\nCall to attend/participate:\n\n\n\nParticipants are invited to submit an abstract for a 10‑minute Lightning Talk to contribute to the afternoon seminar on the theme Making geography matter in turbulent times. These Lightning Talks will form the basis for subsequent discussion and will be followed by a workshop facilitated by Professor David Higgitt\, Editor‑in‑Chief of JGHE. \n\n\n\nColleagues who wish to attend and/or contribute to the seminar (online or in person)are warmly encouraged to complete the Making Geography Matter in Turbulent Times: GeogEd Pre-RGS Seminar Registration – Fill in form by 27th June 2026.
